About the team:

Luno is a market-leading crypto exchange on a mission to upgrade the world to a better financial system, and we are building a market-leading Compliance function to support these goals. With regional teams in place across APAC, Africa and Europe, including the UK, we are now looking to strengthen these capabilities with a Head of Compliance Advisory to manage the Compliance Advisory team across these regions.

We are growing fast, and this is a superb opportunity to make your mark in a truly outstanding organisation.

The role in a nutshell:

We are looking for a driven, proactive, and ambitious Head of Compliance Advisory who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is capable of leading our global team of Compliance Officers. This role is central to enabling Luno's responsible growth across South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Malaysia and Indonesia, and our future expansion markets.

Reporting to the Global Head of Compliance & Anti-Financial Crime, you will lead and mentor the Compliance Advisory team, setting the global strategy for regulatory advice and to provide support and advice to the business. You will be a senior partner to business, product and regional leaders, ensuring Luno develops and launches products in a robust, responsible, and compliant manner. The successful candidate must be passionate about compliance, an inspiring leader, and motivated to enhance our strong compliance culture across the organisation.

Your mission will be:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage the global team of Country Compliance Officers, fostering a high-performance culture and ensuring the team is resourced to meet business needs.
  • Define and own the global Compliance Advisory framework, ensuring a consistent, scalable and business-enabling approach to providing regulatory advice.
  • Act as the senior advisory partner and final point of escalation for Fleets, Product, Engineering and the Countries teams on the development of new products, services and market-entry strategies.
  • Oversee the team's execution of key compliance tasks, including horizon scanning, gap analysis, assurance reviews and policy development and implementation, ensuring global standards are effectively localised.
  • Lead the global Compliance risk assessment process, working with Country Compliance Officers to gather local inputs and ensure the methodology is robust.
  • Provide strategic oversight of regulatory reporting, including Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) and Cash Transaction Reports (CTRs), ensuring quality and timeliness.
  • Manage senior relationships with business stakeholders, acting as the senior point of contact for global or escalated compliance matters.
  • Partner with the Global Head of Compliance & Anti-Financial Crime to set the strategic direction for the function, reporting on team performance, regulatory risk, and advisory matters to senior management.
  • Collaborate strategically with the Heads of Anti-Financial Crime, Legal, and Onboarding to provide seamless, end-to-end compliance support to the business.

In your first six months, you will:

  • Immerse yourself in Luno, ensuring you have a deep understanding of our business, products, and customers globally.
  • Build strong relationships with your team of Country Compliance Officers, the wider Luno team, and key business stakeholders.
  • Assume full ownership of the global Compliance Advisory function, identifying and executing a strategic plan for continuous improvement and scalability.

A little about you:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in law or a related field.
  • At least 8-10+ years of compliance / AML/CFT experience in the financial services, payments, or fintech industry.
  • Demonstrable (3+ years) experience in the cryptocurrency / VASP industry is a significant advantage.
  • Proven leadership experience, with a track record of managing, mentoring, and developing a distributed, multi-jurisdictional team.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in global AML/CFT standards (FATF), sanctions, and VASP-specific regulations (e.g., Travel Rule).
  • Extensive experience working across multiple jurisdictions. Direct experience with the regulatory landscapes in our key markets (UK, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria) is a significant advantage.
  • Professional compliance, AML/CFT, or risk-related certifications (e.g., CAMS, ICA) are highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in building frameworks and managing senior relationships with regulators and banking partners.
  • A pragmatic and responsible approach to balancing regulatory obligations with business enablement.
  • The ability to collaborate and influence across geographies, functional areas and at an executive level.
