Proof of Work

The Team

Our team is focused on Kraken’s cryptocurrency operations: creating secure, reliable, and resilient services that handle client deposits and withdrawals across an ever-expanding universe of cryptocurrencies and blockchains. Ensuring the safety of our client’s assets is our top priority, while still delivering timely processing of transactions. Behind the scenes, we’re also building tools and services that allow us to transfer and rebalance funds to ensure continued operations (e.g. hot-to-cold, regional, and/or cross-chain transfer of assets), publish regular Proof-Of-Reserves reports to the public, and provide crucial information and insights to other teams, and lots more!

Perseverance is key, crypto presents new challenges all the time and our clients are trusting us with their financial lives every day. There will be new tokens, new Layer 2s, and even a few Layer 1s along the way. You’ll need to build and maintain trusting relationships with each of your team members and peers (including cross-functional ones!) in order to succeed. It’s a true team effort as we work alongside our security, SRE, product, client experience, data, and other engineering teams to bring new things to life, and we do it all while assuming the best intent of our colleagues and acting with professionalism!

This role is ideal for a hands-on people and technical leader that’s passionate about crypto and software engineering. You understand the tech and what’s going on at ground level and facilitate your team into making great decisions, but you’re careful not to let your own opinions outweigh those of others, and strike a healthy balance between trusting the way your team does things currently and challenging them to strive for something better. You find ways to make your team better and deliver: expedite a process, get rid of a blocker, get repetitive work off team members by handling it and/or automating it, and more.

The Opportunity

  • Manage and grow a team of highly qualified and experienced engineers

  • Responsible and accountable for facilitating and contributing to deliverables

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality services in TypeScript (Node) and Rust

  • Spend about 25% of your time writing code, we expect Engineering Managers to have their own ground truth and opinions formed through first hand experience, but not necessarily be “the expert”

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Security, Product, Finance, Design, and Client Experience, to ensure seamless integration of new features and improvements

  • Maintain a security-first mindset by staying informed of the latest trends in blockchain technologies, and Web3 in general

  • Help scale the team by hiring and growing passionate engineers committed to excellence

  • Lead by example and nurture talent in a crypto-focused team, focusing on the growth of developers and ensuring their workload leaves them both challenged and fulfilled

  • Help identify, analyze, and resolve bottlenecks and inefficiencies in processes and codebases

  • Own, drive, and be accountable to KPIs pertaining to reliability, resiliency, durability, and uptime. Most of all, ensuring the continuity of crypto operations

Skills You Should HODL

  • Deep understanding of the Ethereum ecosystem and EVM

  • 7+ years of experience in software development

  • 2+ years proven track record of managing high performance engineering teams

  • Hands-on experience in blockchain or web3 applications, familiar with EVM and contract interaction details

  • Great generalist skills, able to engage new code/technologies at a surface level quickly

  • Proficiency in TypeScript (Node) and/or Rust

  • Familiarity with modern build pipelines and tooling

  • Deep knowledge of software development and delivery best practices; you can identify bottlenecks and/or obstacles holding back your team and find ways to help them move faster

  • Experience driving solutions to key business problems, especially navigating and resolving ambiguity

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
