The team

Kraken Global Sanctions Compliance team supports the Sanctions needs of Kraken and its global subsidiaries. The team is responsible for all things sanctions related, to include investigations, escalations, regulatory reporting, internal controls, testing, issue management and resolution, remediations, program enhancements, audit deliverables, governance, presentations, regulatory responses, new product reviews, risk analysis, review and maintenance of policies and procedures, as well as providing sanctions advisory and guidance to Kraken’s leadership and regional compliance officers. The opportunity

  • Design, Lead, Execute Sanctions Strategy for implementing systemic program enhancements, regulatory updates, optimizations and scaling, remediations and/or issue management.

  • Responsible for design, coordination, and (at times) execution of Sanctions reporting data, dashboards, and risk management data feeds.

  • Develop and carry out communication strategy with cross functional partners to ensure partners are provided transparent and timely updates with regards to Sanctions Strategy.

  • Identify & implement sanctions optimizations, increasing effectiveness & efficiency while meeting global regulatory rigor, and supporting virality & scaling.

  • Support leadership in performing deep rooted sanctions research in preparation for licensing applications, new products, regulatory updates, regulatory inquiries, audits, exams, launch readiness, etc.

  • Lead the business requirements documentation (BRD) process for Sanctions.

  • Own the Sanctions Controls Framework & Controls Inventory, its maintenance, testing, repairs, improvements.

  • Support Sanctions tuning and model validation exercises, led by Compliance Technology, coordinating across sanctions vertical and supporting as needed.

  • Work with the Compliance Technology team to develop, prioritize, and build out the Sanctions Controls roadmap.

  • Build department from the ground up; must be able to build, mentor, and lead a team as well as produce.

  • Present as needed to auditors, examiners, regulators, and executives.

  • Curiosity, navigate ambiguity, change agent, autonomous, team player, partnership, documentation, communication, vision, and follow through are key.

  • Thrive in a start-up like environment, navigating ambiguity, building relationships and collaborating.

Skills you should HODL

  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Data Science, Statistics or related technical field

  • Expert knowledge of Compliance Systems pertaining to Sanctions Compliance & Sanctions Controls (e.g., name screening, transaction screening, IP blocking, sanctions evasion, geo controls circumvention, blockchain monitoring, etc.)

  • 5+ years experience leading Sanctions Strategy & Controls efforts

  • Deep Understanding of global Sanctions regulations (e.g., US, EU, UK, UN, etc.)

  • Must be able to build/lead team as well as work hard and produce

  • Perform detailed root cause analyses as needed

  • Support responses to regulatory requests, subpoenas, and/or VSDs

  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues across functions

  • Experience with SQL and similar tools (e.g., Python) to perform ad-hoc data analysis

  • Trustworthiness and ability to maintain confidential information

  • Ability to take ownership of your work product and consistently deliver results in a face-paced work environment

  • Strong organizational proficiency; ability to communicate horizontally and vertically

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written

  • Experienced responding and/or presenting to Regulators in the US and abroad.

  • Eye for presentation design and attention to detail.

  • Comfort with a high level of context switching and reprioritizing

  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing regulatory environment; fast paced; multi tasking

  • Team Player who appreciates feedback, solving problems, finding solutions, and learning

  • Experience with Global Operations

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience reviewing Enforcement Actions and assessing and addressing sanctions risk with short and long term controls.

  • Experience reviewing Regulatory Sanctions updates, assessing risk, and planning controls enhancements.

  • Working knowledge of blockchain and cryptocurrencies

  • Experience managing sanctions systems for global organization

  • Knowledge of statistics

  • Multilingual
