The Role

We're looking for an Engineering Lead who can do two things exceptionally well: ship world-class software, and grow the people around them – with great judgement and taste in adopting AI.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll spend the majority of your time writing and reviewing code — expect roughly 70% of your week to be concrete engineering work. The remaining 30% is people leadership: running your squad, developing your engineers, and representing engineering in cross-functional conversations. If you're looking to move fully into management, this isn't the role. If you want to lead without losing your craft, it is.

You'll work at the heart of our engineering organisation, where the technical complexity is real: payments, billing engines, asset tracking, enterprise integrations, and a rapidly scaling microservice ecosystem.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership

• Own architectural decisions across your product domain — setting the direction, not just contributing to it
• Design and build complex, high-availability systems that serve thousands of customers and multiple enterprise partners
• Drive engineering quality across your squad: code reviews, technical standards, observability, and reliability
• Identify systemic risks before they become incidents, and lead remediation efforts when they do
• Actively contribute to Cinch's broader engineering culture — RFCs, tech talks, cross-team design reviews
  
  

People Leadership

• Directly manage a squad of 3–6 engineers, including senior ICs
• Run structured 1:1s, support career development, and advocate for your team's growth
• Partner with recruiting to define hiring bars, run technical interviews, and help grow the team
• Give direct, actionable feedback — and create a culture on your squad where feedback flows both ways
• Unblock your team, not just your own work
  
  

Delivery & Cross-Functional Work

• Partner with Product and Design from discovery through launch, shaping requirements before they become specs
• Translate ambiguous business problems into clear engineering roadmaps
• Represent engineering in planning conversations, ensuring technical constraints and opportunities are surfaced early
• Own the end-to-end lifecycle of your squad's features — from scoping to production reliability
  
  

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production systems at scale
• 2+ years of people management experience, with a track record of growing engineers at varying levels
• Solid hands-on experience with PHP and Laravel — you'll be actively working across our stack, including legacy and greenfield surfaces
• Deep expertise in React / NextJS (App Router, SWR/React Query, SSR/ISR) and strong full-stack instincts
• Strong proficiency in Golang or Python for backend systems; comfortable owning API design and service contracts
• Solid command of the AWS stack (Lambda, ECS, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, IAM) and distributed systems patterns
• A track record of making sound architectural decisions under ambiguity and time pressure
• Strong written and verbal communication — you can explain a technical tradeoff to an engineer, a PM, and a founder without changing what you mean, only how you say it
• Ability to work remotely effectively, while managing multiple teams and projects .
• High ownership mentality: you don't wait to be asked, and you don't hand problems off without context
  
  

Nice to Have

• Experience with payments, billing, subscriptions, or fintech — especially in high-volume or regulated environments
• Exposure to microservice ecosystems, event-driven or message-based architectures
• Experience scaling an engineering team through a period of rapid growth
• Strong product intuition — you've pushed back on a spec because you knew there was a better way
