Who are we?

In November 2020 in Côte d’Ivoire, and December 2023 in Senegal, we introduced a groundbreaking financial super app, offering a comprehensive suite of services encompassing online and offline payments, peer-to-peer transactions, fund transfers, and savings and budgeting tools.

As of today, we have empowered thousands of users to perform these financial activities seamlessly, and our rapid growth continues unabated. Our overarching objective is to forge the next generation of digital financial solutions in Francophone Africa. In this region, fewer than 25% of the population currently has access to traditional banking services.

The financial landscape of this region is undergoing a profound transformation, with millions of individuals shifting from basic financial transactions (mobile money) to more sophisticated financial management. Djamo is uniquely positioned to emerge as the premier choice for meeting these evolving financial needs.

We are proud to have garnered support from world-renowned investors, including Y Combinator, Partech, Kima, and Norskeen, which underscores our potential and commitment to reshaping the financial services landscape in Africa.

To support our growth, we are looking for a Lead Product Designer

Your Role

Reporting to the Co-founder, the Lead Product Designer will be setting a high bar for design across all of our products, instilling a design-led culture within our business.

This role is for a lead designer who can tackle design problems from beginning to end.

You will be responsible for managing design requirements at Djamo across iOS, Android, and the web. You will oversee UI and UX on both web and mobile, working closely with our product managers, designers, engineers, and digital finance experts. Most importantly, you will positively impact the lives of millions of people – every day, by bringing simple and fair banking to millions of people living in French-speaking Africa.

We work in small, open, friendly teams, creating products and services people love, using our heads and hearts.

In this capacity, you will be responsible for

  • Take ownership of Djamo’s design across all platforms: apps, websites, social media, emails, and app store listings.
  • Lead and manage design projects throughout the product lifecycle and multiple launches, setting the vision for user experience.
  • Design interfaces and interactions for new features, ensuring high standards in user flows, information architecture, UI, interaction models, and prototypes.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including designers, developers, engineers, product managers, and business teams, to create and ship beautiful, useful digital products.
  • Provide thought leadership to develop the right product strategy, solve complex user experience problems, and deliver solutions that delight users.
  • Conduct user research and usability tests to uncover and address real user needs, continuously improving the product.

You will also have to:

  • Lead a team of experienced and junior designers, managing their professional development through regular 1-1s and providing guidance and support.
  • Focus the team on delivering high-quality features quickly and effectively.
  • Plan objectives and the means to achieve them, organize necessary structures, and monitor progress, making adjustments as needed.
  • Control and ensure objectives are met and resources are used effectively.
  • Motivate and communicate clearly with team members, fostering a desire to succeed and providing the information needed for their work.
  • Develop team members' skills to enhance their effectiveness and support their professional growth.

Your Profile

  • 8-10+ years experience in UX, UI, or product design, working with cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise in detailed interaction and information design, with a passion for mobile design.
  • Proven track record of shipping consumer products and creating world-class experiences.
  • Excellent communication skills for setting up frameworks, brainstorming, mentoring, and presenting to clients.
  • Proficient in customer journey mapping, user research/testing, information architecture, competitor analysis, product wireframes, interactive prototypes, and UI design.
  • Experienced in working with brand and style guidelines to produce high-resolution designs and prototypes.
  • Familiar with relevant technology at least at a high level.

You are

  • Systems thinker with experience designing systems, not just screens.
  • Capable of developing approaches and processes for problem-solving and leading solutions for undefined problem spaces.
  • Confident in owning and evolving a brand.
  • Experienced in working within an Agile development team and designing user interfaces for web, mobile, and tablet.
  • Skilled in creating low-fi sketches and pixel-perfect visual designs with a good eye for design.
  • Knowledgeable in various design methodologies and processes.
  • Excellent communicator of design work and rationale, serving as a thought leader and face of design.

Why work at Djamo

  • Balance between autonomy and collaboration, insight and intuition, work and life.
  • Work in small, open, friendly teams to create beloved products and services.
  • Ethical and stimulating environment.
  • Contribute to the rapid expansion of a startup in French-speaking Africa.
  • Positively impact millions by providing simple and fair banking.
  • Collaborative, fun environment with strong team spirit and a culture of continuous employee development.

We will consider all applications on the same basis. Djamo is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. You are not ticking every box or thinking you’ve got that unique set of skills we haven’t realized we need. Apply anyway; we’re always looking to add great people at every level.
